Columbus Motor Speedway - 2009 Platform Collapse

2009 Platform Collapse

The race track made national headlines on April 11, 2009, when the concrete platform that supported the announcer's box collapsed shortly after the gate opened. One person was temporarily stuck in the rubble, and six people suffered minor injuries at the season-opening event. Local rescue workers were called to the scene and the events were canceled for the evening. Since the incident the platform has been repaired and reinforced to prevent a similar episode from ever happening in the future.

Famous quotes containing the words platform and/or collapse:

The use of literature is to afford us a platform whence we may command a view of our present life, a purchase by which we may move it.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

I confidently predict the collapse of capitalism and the beginning of history. Something will go wrong in the machinery that converts money into money, the banking system will collapse totally, and we will be left having to barter to stay alive. Those who can dig in their garden will have a better chance than the rest. I’ll be all right; I’ve got a few veg.
    Margaret Drabble (b. 1939)
