Columbus Fountain - Condition and Conservation

Condition and Conservation

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places, on March 7, 1968.

In October 1992 the memorial was spray painted with graffiti and the National Park Service removed it with surface cleaners. In March 1994 the work was surveyed by the Save Outdoor Sculpture! program and was described as needing treatment.

The fountain has appeared severely deteriorated for many years and its plumbing is not believed to be in operable condition.

Famous quotes containing the words condition and/or conservation:

Manners are of such great consequence to the novelist that any kind will do. Bad manners are better than no manners at all, and because we are losing our customary manners, we are probably overly conscious of them; this seems to be a condition that produces writers.
    Flannery O’Connor (1925–1964)

The putting into force of laws which shall secure the conservation of our resources, as far as they may be within the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, including the more important work of saving and restoring our forests and the great improvement of waterways, are all proper government functions which must involve large expenditure if properly performed.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
