Colorado T-REX Project (TRansportation EXpansion) - Argument For Light Rail Instead of HOV Lanes

Argument For Light Rail Instead of HOV Lanes

Light rail transit was endorsed because of the following reasons noted in the T-REX factbook:

  • Light rail has significantly less impact to existing residences and businesses in the corridor and to natural resources, such as wetlands, parks, and historic properties.
  • Light rail has the greatest potential carrying capacity
  • Light rail has the best travel time
  • Light rail requires the lowest investment per user
  • Light rail had stronger potential for joint development
  • Light rail is the most reliable and safe option
  • Light rail had stronger community support

Additionally, Denver Mayor, John Hickenlooper said "Light rail offers a good solution to congestion because, even if you add more highway lanes, they quickly are filled with more cars. "You can add more and more traffic to the rail line, and not only does it not slow down, it takes more people," Mayor Hickenlooper continued, "Combining rail lines with highway expansion has a lot of appeal to voters, but the ability to do so depends on the amount of space available for the project."

Famous quotes containing the words argument, light, rail and/or lanes:

Because a person is born the subject of a given state, you deny the sovereignty of the people? How about the child of Cuban slaves who is born a slave, is that an argument for slavery? The one is a fact as well as the other. Why then, if you use legal arguments in the one case, you don’t in the other?
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

And how much longer a story has science
Before she must put out the light on the children
And tell them the rest of the story is dreaming?
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

If goodness were only a theory, it were a pity it should be lost to the world. There are a number of things, the idea of which is a clear gain to the mind. Let people, for instance, rail at friendship, genius, freedom, as long as they will—the very names of these despised qualities are better than anything else that could be substituted for them, and embalm even the most envenomed satire against them.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)

    freeways fifty lanes wide
    on a concrete continent
    spaced with bland billboards
    illustrating imbecile illusions of happiness
    Lawrence Ferlinghetti (b. 1919)
