Athletics

Magruder High School Athletics is one of many storied programs within Montgomery County, MD. As attested by the number of Regional & State Champions it has produced, Magruder has become a part of the top echelon of elites in the entire state. The school continues to be a powerhouse in Women's Volleyball, Men's Soccer, Wrestling, as well as Field Hockey and Men's Ice Hockey. In previous years, the Magruder Men's Basketball team was also a top-notch competitor. In more recent years, however, the team has not had the same level of success as it had in previous years.

Although Magruder has not produced a state title in Women's Volleyball, it has created one of the top volleyball programs in the state under head coach Scott Zanni, often ranking in the Washington Post Top 10 and the Montgomery County Gazette Top 5.

  • 2004 4A State Finalists (22-3 Record), ranked #4 by the Washington Post.
  • 2009 4A State Finalists (24-1 Record), ranked #7 by the Washington Post, #1 by the Gazette.
  • 2008 4A State Semifinalists (22-2 Record), ranked #5 by the Washington Post, #2 by the Gazette.
  • 4A West Region Champions 2004, 2008, & 2009.
  • The Women's Volleyball team won 8 county titles in 9 years from 2001-2009 (none in 2002).
  • The Women's Volleyball team has won 7 Magruder Invitational titles with 5 consecutive titles in 2006-2010 in the tournament's 13 year history.
  • The team boasts a 219-41 record (as of November 15, 2010) composing of the past 11 seasons with 20 or more wins in the last seven seasons (2003–2009).
  • The 2006 and 2009 teams finished the regular season undefeated at 20-0 and 23-0, respectively.
  • The Women's Volleyball team has been ranked in the Washington Post's Top 10 in the past 7 of 8 seasons.

The Boy's Varsity Soccer Team has also been a consistent Top Ranker in the DC Metro Area as well as Nationally.

  • 2010 4A State Champions, finishing with a 16-1-2 record. Ranked 7th in the DC Metro Area.
  • In 2007, the Boy's Soccer Team went undefeated at 19-0 and won the 4A West Region Championship as well as the Maryland Class 4A State Title. It was in the same season that Magruder was ranked 7th nationally, and 1st in the DC Metro Area.
  • In 2001, the Boy's Soccer Team won its first Class 4A State Title
  • The Boy's Soccer Team suffered its first losing season in over a decade in Fall 2009.
  • The Boy's Soccer Team has hosted and won the Doug Abel Tournament several times.
  • Several players from Magruder continue to play at the NCAA Division I level.
