In 1846 Louis-Nicolas Ménard devised a mixture of ether (ethoxyethane) as the solvent and ethanol as a diluent that rendered cellulose nitrate into a clear gelatinous liquid. The liquid was dubbed “collodion” (from the Latin collodium meaning glutinous).
