Collegiate A Cappella - History

History

It is not known exactly when or where collegiate a cappella began. The Rensselyrics of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (formerly known as the RPI Glee Club), established in 1873, is perhaps the oldest known collegiate a cappella group. The longest continuously-operating group is thought to be The Whiffenpoofs of Yale University, which was formed in 1909. The first a cappella groups at other American Ivy League Universities include the Princeton Nassoons (c.1939-41), the Dartmouth Aires (1946), the Harvard Krokodiloes (1946), the Jabberwocks of Brown University (1949), and Cornell's Cayuga's Waiters (1949). The first all women's ensemble, the Smiffenpoofs, was founded in 1936 at Smith College, and the longest continuously-operating female a cappella group, the Mount Holyoke College V8s, was founded in 1942.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)

It is the true office of history to represent the events themselves, together with the counsels, and to leave the observations and conclusions thereupon to the liberty and faculty of every man’s judgement.
    Francis Bacon (1561–1626)

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
Adonis [Ali Ahmed Said] (b. 1930)
