Women's Rugby: An Emerging Sport
The National Collegiate Athletic Association identified women's rugby as an "Emerging Sport" in 2002. An "Emerging Sport" must gain championship status (minimum 28 varsity programs for team sports) within 10 years, or show steady progress toward that goal to remain on the list. Until then, it is under the auspices of the NCAA and its respective institutions. With only 5 teams, Emerging Sport status allows for competition to include club teams to satisfy the minimum number of competitions bylaw established by the NCAA.
Current and planned varsity women's rugby programs include the following:
- Quinnipiac University
- Eastern Illinois University (Division 1)
- West Chester University (Division 1)
- Bowdoin College
- Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania (Division 1)
- Norwich University (Division 1)
- Harvard University (will offer varsity women's rugby beginning fall 2013)
- Davenport University (will offer varsity women's rugby beginning fall 2013)

Famous quotes containing the words women, emerging and/or sport:
“Good women always think it is their fault when someone else is being offensive. Bad women never take the blame for anything.”
—Anita Brookner (b. 1938)
“That which is given to see
At any moment is the residue, shadowed
In gold or emerging into the clear bluish haze
Of uncertainty. We come back to ourselves
Through the rubbish of cloud and tree-spattered pavement.
These days stand like vapor under the trees.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
“If a walker is indeed an individualist there is nowhere he cant go at dawn and not many places he cant go at noon. But just as it demeans life to live alongside a great river you can no longer swim in or drink from, to be crowded into safer areas and hours takes much of the gloss off walkingone sport you shouldnt have to reserve a time and a court for.”
—Edward Hoagland (b. 1932)
