'Dark Isle' Status
In April 2012, in a bid to boost tourism, residents on the Isle of Coll applied for it to be granted the status of Scotland's first Dark Skies Island. They were sated confidence that the designation would be granted by Summer 2012. The island has little light pollution and no street lights meaning that in winter the Northern Lights and the Milky Way are often visible.
