Famous quotes containing the words thomas, higginson and/or house:

    I
    Am found.
    O let him
    Scald me and drown
    Me in his world’s wound.
    His lightning answers my
Cry. My voice burns in his hand.
    —Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

The Englishman’s strong point is his vigorous insularity; that of the American his power of adaptation. Each of these attitudes has its perils. The Englishman stands firmly on his feet, but he who merely does this never advances. The American’s disposition is to step forward even at the risk of a fall.
    —Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823–1911)

They had never had one in the house before.
The strangeness of it all. Like unleashing
    A lion, really. Poised
To pounce. A puma. A panther. A black
    Bear.
    Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)
