Former Coat of Arms
The chain of office of the Mayor of Toronto includes the coats of arms of all prior municipalities, including the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.
Only the coats of arms for the current City of Toronto and the former City of Scarborough are registered in the Canadian Heraldic Authority's Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada. The former city of York is the only former municipality in Metropolitan Toronto to have a motto in Latin, while the other municipalities were in English.

Famous quotes containing the words coat and/or arms:
“I expect a time when, or rather an integrity by which, a man will get his coat as honestly and as perfectly fitting as a tree its bark. Now our garments are typical of our conformity to the ways of the world, i.e., of the devil, and to some extent react on us and poison us, like that shirt which Hercules put on.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Once they came on a maple in a glade,
Standing alone with smooth arms lifted up,
And every leaf of foliage shed worn
Laid scarlet and pale pink about her feet.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
