your bright stones on my hand,
    the gaudy fur animals
I do not know how to use,
settle on me like a debt.

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; out the rain
    Is full of ghosts tonight,
    Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892–1950)

During the week we spent together I took off my shoes, let down my hair, took apart my psyche, cleaned the pieces, and put them together again in much improved condition.
