Coat of Arms of Bern

The coat of arms of Bern, along with the associated flag and heraldic colours, are used both by the Swiss city of Bern and by the canton of the same name. Until its abolition in 2009, the they were also used by the former district of Bern.

The coat of arms of Bern is on a red field a yellow diagonal band charged with a black bear walking upwards toward the hoist. The heraldic blazon reads: Gules, on a bend or, a bear passant sable, langued, armed and vilené of the field. The flag of Bern is square and depicts the coat of arms. The heraldic colours of Bern are red and black.

Famous quotes containing the words coat of, coat and/or arms:

    Commit a crime and the world is made of glass. Commit a crime, and it seems as if a coat of snow fell on the ground, such as reveals in the woods the track of every partridge and fox and squirrel and mole.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    I can sit up half the night
    With some friend that has the wit
    Not to allow his looks to tell
    When I am unintelligible.
    Fifteen apparitions have I seen;
    The worst a coat upon a coat-hanger.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    A line in long array, where they wind betwixt green islands;
    They take a serpentine course—their arms flash in the sun—hark to the musical clank;
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)
