Clunes Railway Station

Clunes Railway Station

Clunes is a railway station in the township of Clunes, Victoria, Australia. The station was opened in 1874, and was closed in 1993 when passenger services discontinued on the Mildura Line. Since that time the station has been left empty, with the station building and platform still in place. It re-opened, along with the restoration of passenger services to Maryborough, in November 2011.

The station, along with parts of the main street, were famously used in the film Mad Max when the bikie crew pick up the Nightrider's coffin. Reg Evans who played the Station Master in this scene was killed in the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009.

The return of passenger services to Maryborough was announced in December 2008 as part of a $50 million project, but as recently as October 2009 the State Government had stated there would be no station at Clunes, the only intermediate stop being at Creswick.

Famous quotes containing the words railway and/or station:

Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understand—my mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arm’s length.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

...I believe it is now the duty of the slaves of the South to rebuke their masters for their robbery, oppression and crime.... No station or character can destroy individual responsibility, in the matter of reproving sin.
    Angelina Grimké (1805–1879)
