Clover (dairy) - History

History

In October 1898 a group of farmers met on a farm in the district of Weenen, Kwa-Zulu Natal, in South Africa to discuss the establishment of a butter factory. Subsequently a co-operative company called the Natal Creamery Ltd was registered with H. Blaker appointed as the first chairman. J Baynes started the first butter factory in Kwa-Zulu Natal in 1899 and entered into a partnership with the Natal Creamery for the marketing of fresh milk in Durban. The partnership lasted only until October 1901 and in the following year Natal Creamery commenced to distribute milk in Pietermaritzburg under its own name. During 1903 the Natal Creamery’s operation was expanded to deliver milk to Johannesburg on a daily basis and in 1906 the company took over the Johannesburg Milk Supply company Ltd. By 1932 Natal Creamery was operating in 32 centers country wide. In 1943 the operation of a hundred percent co-operative style system was approved and the name of the Natal Creamery Ltd was changed to National Co-operative Dairies Limited (NCD). Clover S.A. (PTY) Ltd was formed as an operational company by NCD in 1994. The following year Clover S.A. (Pty) Ltd and Compagnie Gervais Danone partnered in a joint venture. In 2003 a decision was made to convert NCD from a co-operative to a public company and at the same time change the name to Clover Industries Limited (CIL). Three years later Clover S.A (Pty) Ltd and Fonterra Ltd of New Zealand form the Clover Fonterra Ingredients (Pty) Ltd joint venture and another 2 years later Danone Clover (PTY) Ltd acquired a 70% interest in Mayo Dairy (Pty) Ltd. However 2009 and 2010 saw the deconsolidation, recapitalization and eventually sale of Danone Clover (Pty) Ltd. Also in 2010 Clover industries limited was listed on the main board of the JSE limited. 2011 saw the buyout of the non-controlling interest of Clover Beverages Ltd. and the subsequent transfer of the non-alcoholic beverages business to Clover SA. At present CIL is the holding company of Clover S.A, South Africa’s largest dairy company and one of the leading manufacturers and marketers of food products in Southern Africa.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Humankind has understood history as a series of battles because, to this day, it regards conflict as the central facet of life.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)

We don’t know when our name came into being or how some distant ancestor acquired it. We don’t understand our name at all, we don’t know its history and yet we bear it with exalted fidelity, we merge with it, we like it, we are ridiculously proud of it as if we had thought it up ourselves in a moment of brilliant inspiration.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)
