Famous quotes containing the words white house, white, house and/or staff:

I want a place where I can sit back in the rocker and say, “Do you remember when we picketed the White House in 1965?”
    Barbara Gittings (b. 1932)

    Knowing that you shall feel,
    about the frame,
    no trembling of the string
    but heat, more passionate
of bone and the white shell
    and fiery tempered steel.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

You see how this House of Commons has begun to verify all the ill prophecies that were made of it—low, vulgar, meddling with everything, assuming universal competency, and flattering every base passion—and sneering at everything noble refined and truly national. The direct tyranny will come on by and by, after it shall have gratified the multitude with the spoil and ruin of the old institutions of the land.
    Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)

Then he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones from the wadi, and put them in his shepherd s bag, in the pouch; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.
    Bible: Hebrew, 1 Samuel 17:40.
