History

For more details on this topic, see Rail transport in Queensland.

The railway was opened to Manly in 1888 and extended to the first Cleveland station in 1889. An extension to the second Cleveland station opened in 1897, at which time the first Cleveland station was renamed West Cleveland (later Cleveland Central).

A further extension to Redland Bay and Mount Cotton was surveyed in 1889. An extension to Redland Bay was again recommended by the Royal Commission into Public Works in 1922 but was never built.

The duplication from Park Road to Murarrie was opened on 17 June 1912.

In 1960, the line from Lota to Cleveland was closed.

The line beyond Lota was rebuilt and reopened on a new alignment to Thorneside in 1982 and the third Cleveland station (formerly Raby Bay) in 1987.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The only history is a mere question of one’s struggle inside oneself. But that is the joy of it. One need neither discover Americas nor conquer nations, and yet one has as great a work as Columbus or Alexander, to do.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

What we call National-Socialism is the poisonous perversion of ideas which have a long history in German intellectual life.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)

It gives me the greatest pleasure to say, as I do from the bottom of my heart, that never in the history of the country, in any crisis and under any conditions, have our Jewish fellow citizens failed to live up to the highest standards of citizenship and patriotism.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
