Class Number Formula - General Statement of The Class Number Formula

General Statement of The Class Number Formula

Let K be a number field with =n=r1+2r2, where denotes the number of real embeddings of K, and is the number of complex embeddings of K. Let

be the Dedekind zeta function of K. Also define the following invariants:

  • is the class number, the number of elements in the ideal class group of K.
  • is the regulator of K.
  • is the number of roots of unity contained in K.
  • is the discriminant of the extension K/Q.

Then:

Theorem 1 (Class Number Formula) The Dedekind zeta function of K, converges absolutely for and extends to a meromorphic function defined for all complex s with only one simple pole at s = 1, with residue

This is the most general "class number formula". In particular cases, for example when K is a cyclotomic extension of Q, there are particular and more refined class number formulas.

Famous quotes containing the words general, statement, class, number and/or formula:

The nearest the modern general or admiral comes to a small-arms encounter of any sort is at a duck hunt in the company of corporation executives at the retreat of Continental Motors, Inc.
    C. Wright Mills (1916–1962)

One is apt to be discouraged by the frequency with which Mr. Hardy has persuaded himself that a macabre subject is a poem in itself; that, if there be enough of death and the tomb in one’s theme, it needs no translation into art, the bold statement of it being sufficient.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)

Planning ahead is a measure of class. The rich and even the middle class plan for future generations, but the poor can plan ahead only a few weeks or days.
    Gloria Steinem (b. 1934)

No Government can be long secure without a formidable Opposition. It reduces their supporters to that tractable number which can be managed by the joint influences of fruition and hope. It offers vengeance to the discontented, and distinction to the ambitious; and employs the energies of aspiring spirits, who otherwise may prove traitors in a division or assassins in a debate.
    Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881)

For the myth is the foundation of life; it is the timeless schema, the pious formula into which life flows when it reproduces its traits out of the unconscious.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)
