Clan Stewart of Appin - Adherents and Clansmen

Adherents and Clansmen

Most of the clan did not use the surname "Stewart", or indeed any surname as their use was not the norm in Highland and Island society. The average clansman was descended from family groups (not clans), each of which represent a sept (social), and many of which had lived in North Lorn long before Dugald, 1st of Appin formed the clan. These septs included the Carmichaels, MacCombichs, MacColls, MacGillemichaels, McIlmichaels, MacInness, MacLeays, MacMichaels and MacRobbs (related by blood to the Stewarts).

Famous quotes containing the word adherents:

Christianity is the religion of melancholy and hypochondria. Islam, on the other hand, promotes apathy, and Judaism instills its adherents with a certain choleric vehemence, the heathen Greeks may well be called happy optimists.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)
