Clabber Girl

Clabber Girl is a brand of baking powder, baking soda and corn starch popular in the United States, manufactured by Hulman & Co., which also owns and operates the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar, the sanctioning body for American open-wheel racing. The Clabber Girl name brand comes from the word clabber which means clabbered milk (sour milk). Back in the early 1800s, people mixed clabber with pearl ash, soda, cream of tartar and a few other ingredients to make what we know today as baking powder. The first baking powder brand by Hulman and company was the "Milk Brand". In 1899 it was changed to the "Clabber Brand". In 1923 the company changed the name to "Clabber Girl".

Famous quotes containing the words clabber and/or girl:

As they say, when a man begins to have bad luck, even clabber can break his head.
    Jacques Roumain (1907–1945)

I knew that I had seen, had seen at last
That girl my unremembering nights hold fast
Or else my dreams that fly
If I should rub an eye,
And yet in flying fling into my meat
A crazy juice that makes the pulses beat....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
