City of Taunton (ship) - The Ship

The Ship

The City of Taunton was one of the magnificent sidepaddle steamships of the Fall River Line. These were often referred to as floating palaces because of the grandeur. "The Fall River Line steamships' gilded interiors appealed not only to the wealthy clientele who rode the ships, but to middle-class passengers as well. The ships gave people of other classes the actual experience of spending a night within the architectural splendor of wealth." With passengers and cargo she was part of the connection between Boston and New York. "On Sunday evenings, passengers left Boston for New York from the Old Colony Railroad Depot. They boarded the steamers in Fall River and traveled to Newport, then continued on the overnight trip back to New York."

Famous quotes containing the word ship:

What do we plant when we plant the tree?
We plant the ship that will cross the sea,
We plant the mast to carry the sails,
We plant the planks to withstand the gales—
The keel, the keelson, and beam and knee—
We plant the ship when we plant the tree.
    Henry Abbey (1842–1911)

If the oarsmen of a fast-moving ship suddenly cease to row, the suspension of the driving force of the oars doesn’t prevent the vessel from continuing to move on its course. And with a speech it is much the same. After he has finished reciting the document, the speaker will still be able to maintain the same tone without a break, borrowing its momentum and impulse from the passage he has just read out.
    Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 B.C)
