Early Life
Chuck was born in El Campo, Texas (Wharton County), the third of three children born to Earl and Lovell Swindoll. He attended Charles H. Milby High Schoolin Houston, Texas, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and excelled in drama and music. (Today, he credits his drama teacher, Dick Nieme, for helping him overcome a severe stuttering problem.) As a member of the school marching band and orchestra, he learned to play all of the instruments in the woodwind section, although the saxophone remained his primary instrument. After graduating from high school, Chuck studied mechanical engineering while working for Reed Roller Bit Company in Houston, Texas. Chuck then fulfilled his military service obligation with the United States Marine Corps, first in San Francisco, then on the Japanese island of Okinawa. After his honorable discharge in 1959, Chuck attended Dallas Theological Seminary, where he graduated magna cum laude four years later. He married his wife, Cynthia, on June 18, 1955, and the couple has four children.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“Women who marry early are often overly enamored of the kind of man who looks great in wedding pictures and passes the maid of honor his telephone number.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
“... business training in early life should not be regarded solely as insurance against destitution in the case of an emergency. For from business experience women can gain, too, knowledge of the world and of human beings, which should be of immeasurable value to their marriage careers. Self-discipline, co-operation, adaptability, efficiency, economic management,if she learns these in her business life she is liable for many less heartbreaks and disappointments in her married life.”
—Hortense Odlum (1892?)
