Christopher Martin (Mayflower Pilgrim) - Life in England

Life in England

Christopher Martin resided in the Billericay area of Great Burstead, Essex and by 1607 he was working there as a merchant although he probably had not served a formal apprenticeship. He was a merchant by trade, and shortly after his 1607 marriage, at the Quarter Sessions court, he was sued by another merchant, George Hilles, for unlawful trading.

In 1611, at Great Burstead, he was appointed a churchwarden but in 1612, he may have likely followed Puritan religious philosophy as both he and his wife refused to kneel for holy communion. In 1616/17, Christopher Martin invested 25£ for the transportation of two persons to Virginia with Ralph Hamor. In 1619/20, he and his step-son Solomon had a problem with the Archbishop Court at Chelmsford for refusing to follow Catholic ritual.

In soliciting donations from his flock, a preacher may promise eternal life in a celestial city whose streets are paved with gold, and that’s none of the law’s business. But if he promises an annual free stay in a luxury hotel on Earth, he’d better have the rooms available.
Unknown. Charlotte Observer (October 6, 1989)

While England endeavors to cure the potato-rot, will not any endeavor to cure the brain-rot, which prevails so much more widely and fatally?
