Christopher Columbus High School (Miami) - Mas Family Scholars Program

Mas Family Scholars Program

Started in the 2005-2006 school year, the Mas Family Scholars Program is an accelerated program at Christopher Columbus High School. The program was started by the Mas Family, who founded MasTec, Inc., to provide select Columbus students with a challenging curriculum. In addition to having an advanced curriculum, the students in the program participate in extracurricular activities. Mas Scholars are encouraged to participate in sports and to encompass the ideal of the student athlete. Mas Scholars

The Mas Family Scholars Program is an accelerated program of studies designed to enable highly motivated students to excel in academics. Students in the program participate in many enrichment opportunities and extracurricular activities. The program offers Columbus’ most challenging curriculum. In fact, the curriculum is considered to be one of the most challenging for high school boys in South Florida. Participants in the program are ensured to graduate with a minimum of 30 Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment college credits. The combination of the program’s curriculum and enrichment opportunities is designed to prepare students to be among the top candidates for admission into major colleges and universities.

The program is a continuing collaborative effort between Columbus and the Mas Family. Brothers Jorge, Juan, and Jose Mas, sons of the late Jorge Mas Canosa, founder of MasTec, Inc., are all proud Columbus graduates. Famous quotes containing the words family, scholars and/or program:

Providing for one’s family as a good husband and father is a water-tight excuse for making money hand over fist. Greed may be a sin, exploitation of other people might, on the face of it, look rather nasty, but who can blame a man for “doing the best” for his children?
    Eva Figes (b. 1932)

Let ideas establish their legitimate sway again in society, let life be fair and poetic, and the scholars will gladly be lovers, citizens, and philanthropists.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The twelve Cells for Incorrigibles ... are also carved out of the solid rock hill. On the walls of one of the cells human “liberty” is clearly inscribed, with the “liberty” in significant quotation marks.
—Administration in the State of Ariz, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
