Metzelder's younger brother, Malte, is also a footballer (and a centre back), and both played for Borussia Dortmund. Malte currently plays for FC Ingolstadt 04 in the German second division.
He has one daughter, Emma (born 17 October 2009), with then-girlfriend Julia Gödicke.
