Major Denominations Within Christianity
See also: List of Christian denominations and List of Christian denominations by number of membersThe three primary divisions of Christianity are Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. There are other Christian groups that do not fit neatly into one of these primary categories. The Nicene Creed is "accepted as authoritative by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and major Protestant churches." There is a diversity of doctrines and practices among groups calling themselves Christian. These groups are sometimes classified under denominations, though for theological reasons many groups reject this classification system. Another distinction that is sometimes drawn is between Eastern Christianity and Western Christianity.

Famous quotes containing the words major and/or christianity:
“As a novelist, I cannot occupy myself with characters, or at any rate central ones, who lack panache, in one or another sense, who would be incapable of a major action or a major passion, or who have not a touch of the ambiguity, the ultimate unaccountability, the enlarging mistiness of persons in history. History, as more austerely I now know it, is not romantic. But I am.”
—Elizabeth Bowen (18991973)
“Wherever there are walls I shall inscribe this eternal accusation against Christianity upon themI can write in letters which make even the blind see ... I call Christianity the one great curse, the one great intrinsic depravity, the one great instinct for revenge for which no expedient is sufficiently poisonous, secret, subterranean, pettyI call it the one immortal blemish of mankind....”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
