Christian Renatus Von Zinzendorf - Death and Apotheosis

Death and Apotheosis

Zinzendorf died on May 28, 1752 from a hemorrhage, with John Nitschmann, his former tutor, beside him. He was buried on the grounds of Lindsey House, located in Chelsea outside London, where his father lived at that time and directed the worldwide missionary effort of the church.

An apotheosis written after his death links Christel to Christ by quoting 1 Corinthians 15:4: “And that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures” and declaring that Christel is sitting directly beside Christ. The apotheosis also states that "The face Moses saw at Thabor is the same face Christel brought to you."

Herrnhaag was closed and a number of Single Brothers came to Pennsylvania where they settled at a community already named Christiansbrunn, the Spring of Christian. One of the brothers wrote a poem stating that Christel lived again in the spring and that the flowing waters restored him “more and more.”

Famous quotes containing the words death and and/or death:

    Time turns the old days to derision,
    Our loves into corpses or wives;
    And marriage and death and division
    Make barren our lives.
    —A.C. (Algernon Charles)

    After my death I wish no other herald,
    No other speaker of my living actions
    To keep mine honor from corruption,
    But such an honest chronicler as Griffith.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
