Chinnoor - History

History

Chennoor has one of the earliest settlements, located on the banks of Godavari river. During the Godavari Pushkara times thousands of pilgrims come here to perform rituals. Generally Godavari flows from west to east but the Godavari river in Chenoor flows towards the north for 5 Kosa (15 km) hence it is known as "Panchkosi Uttara Wahini".

The place has cultural relations with villages that have similar features - Manthini, Dharmapuri and Kaleswaram.

The ancient temple "shivalayam" is also known as Agasteshwaralayam. It is believed that Agasta Muni has performed Tapasya here on the bank of River Godavari. This is believed to be built by Thimmarusu, during the Krishna devaraya times in the 16th century. Some of the other temples popular here are round temple, Jagannatha aalayam, Bada Hanuman.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The basic idea which runs right through modern history and modern liberalism is that the public has got to be marginalized. The general public are viewed as no more than ignorant and meddlesome outsiders, a bewildered herd.
    Noam Chomsky (b. 1928)

It is true that this man was nothing but an elemental force in motion, directed and rendered more effective by extreme cunning and by a relentless tactical clairvoyance .... Hitler was history in its purest form.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

Don’t you realize that this is a new empire? Why, folks, there’s never been anything like this since creation. Creation, huh, that took six days, this was done in one. History made in an hour. Why it’s a miracle out of the Old Testament!
    Howard Estabrook (1884–1978)
