China Women's National Volleyball Team

The China women's national volleyball team (Chinese: 中国女排) represents the People's Republic of China in international volleyball competitions and friendly matches. It's one of the leading squads in women's international volleyball, twice having won the Olympic title (1984 and 2004).

China took five consecutive World titles in the 1980s. Although it experienced an unstable development in the 1990s, the team won the World Cup title in 2003 and captured the gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Culturally, women's volleyball fielded the first ever Chinese team to be successful on a global scale, and was of great importance in the early 1980s, when the team was largely followed in China.

Famous quotes containing the words china, women, national and/or team:

In a country where misery and want were the foundation of the social structure, famine was periodic, death from starvation common, disease pervasive, thievery normal, and graft and corruption taken for granted, the elimination of these conditions in Communist China is so striking that negative aspects of the new rule fade in relative importance.
    Barbara Tuchman (1912–1989)

I’ve sometimes thought ... that the difference between us and the English is that the Scotch are hard in all other respects but soft with women, and the English are hard with women but soft in all other respects.
    —J.M. (James Matthew)

The principle of all sovereignty resides essentially in the nation.
—French National Assembly. Declaration of the Rights of Man (Sept. 1791)

    Is my team ploughing,
That I was used to drive
    And hear the harness jingle
    When I was man alive?
    —A.E. (Alfred Edward)
