Early Years
Chikka Devaraja was born on September 22, 1645, the eldest son of Rani Amrit Ammani Avaru and Dodda Deva Raja, who had been a Governor of Mysore town. He succeeded his uncle, Dodda Deva Raja, upon the latter's death on February 11, 1673, as the new wodeyar. He was installed on the gaddi at Mysore on February 28, 1673. He continued his predecessor's expansion by conquering Maddagiri, and thereby making Mysore contiguous to the Carnatic-Bijapur-Balaghat province administered by Venkoji, the Raja of Tanjore, and Shivaji's half-brother.

“At the earliest ending of winter,
In March, a scrawny cry from outside
Seemed like a sound in his mind.
He knew that he heard it,
A birds cry, at daylight or before,
In the early March wind.”

“Sam Tostin: You know I spent a lot of years disliking women. But I dont dislike you.
Major Hayward: Dont you?
