Development
The district lay on the edge of the Greater London Conurbation and experienced a rapid population growth, in part caused by London County Council out-county construction at Debden, part of Loughton, the U.D.'s headquarters, and also in the south east of the district of the Hainault Estate (which also extended into neighbouring Ilford and Dagenham). Extensive council house building by the CUDC itself took place between Buckhurst Hill and Loughton.
In 1948, the New Works Programme of the London Passenger Transport Board brought the London Underground services of the Central line to six stations in the district; namely Roding Valley, Chigwell, Grange Hill, Buckhurst Hill, Loughton and Debden. The large LT Hainault depot was also mostly in the U.D.

Famous quotes containing the word development:
“Information about child development enhances parents capacity to respond appropriately to their children. Informed parents are better equipped to problem-solve, more confident of their decisions, and more likely to respond sensitively to their childrens developmental needs.”
—L. P. Wandersman (20th century)
“For the child whose impulsiveness is indulged, who retains his primitive-discharge mechanisms, is not only an ill-behaved child but a child whose intellectual development is slowed down. No matter how well he is endowed intellectually, if direct action and immediate gratification are the guiding principles of his behavior, there will be less incentive to develop the higher mental processes, to reason, to employ the imagination creatively. . . .”
—Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
