Chief Ministers Of The Australian Capital Territory

The Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory is the head of government of the Australian Capital Territory. The leader of party with the largest representation of seats in the unicameral Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly usually takes on the role. Unlike in other states and territories, the Chief Minister of the ACT is not nominally appointed by an Administrator or Vice-Regal, but elected directly by the Assembly. The role of the Chief Minister is roughly equivalent to that of the Premiers of the states of Australia or the mayor of a local council.

The current Chief Minister is Katy Gallagher, who was elected by the Assembly on 16 May 2011 following the resignation of Jon Stanhope on 12 May 2011.

Famous quotes containing the words chief, ministers, australian, capital and/or territory:

Is it not the chief disgrace in the world, not to be an unit;Mnot to be reckoned one character;Mnot to yield that peculiar fruit which each man was created to bear, but to be reckoned in the gross, in the hundred, or the thousand, of the party, the section, to which we belong; and our opinion predicted geographically, as the north, or the south?
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

... the black girls didn’t get these pills because their black ministers were up on the pulpit saying that birth control pills were black genocide. What I’m saying is that black men have exploited black women.... They didn’t want them to have any choice about their reproductive health. And if you can’t control your reproduction, you can’t control your life.
    Joycelyn Elders (b. 1933)

Beyond the horizon, or even the knowledge, of the cities along the coast, a great, creative impulse is at work—the only thing, after all, that gives this continent meaning and a guarantee of the future. Every Australian ought to climb up here, once in a way, and glimpse the various, manifold life of which he is a part.
    Vance Palmer (1885–1959)

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data.
    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930)

A Country is not a mere territory; the particular territory is only its foundation. The Country is the idea which rises upon that foundation; it is the sentiment of love, the sense of fellowship which binds together all the sons of that territory.
    Giuseppe Mazzini (1805–1872)
