Chief Ministers Of Goa

The chief minister of Goa is the head of government of Goa, India. The holder of this position has the same powers and duties as all other chief ministers in Indian states. This position was first held after the late 1963 election, when Dayanand Bandodkar, a mine-owner, was elected the first chief minister of Goa, by his Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party which narrowly won the first election after the end of Portuguese rule in 1961.

This position continued after 1987, when Goa was separated from the overland territories of Daman and Diu and upgraded from being a Union Territory to being made a state.

While Dayanand Bandodkar was the first Chief Minister of the centrally administered Union Territories of Goa, Daman and Diu, it was during the tenure of his successor Pratapsingh Rane that Goa was declared as the twenty-fifth state of the Republic of India. Therefore, Pratapsingh Rane is considered the first Chief Minister after Goa achieved statehood.

Goa has been under President's rule four times, from 1966 to 1967, from 1979 to 1980, briefly during 1990, and from March 2005 to June 2005, during which time no Chief Minister functioned.

The current Chief Minister of Goa is Manohar Parrikar (Bharatiya Janata Party), from 9 March 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words chief and/or ministers:

My chief humor is for a tyrant. I could play Ercles rarely, or a part to tear a cat in, to make all split.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

One of the ministers of Truro, when I asked what the fishermen did in the winter, answered that they did nothing but go a- visiting, sit about, and tell stories, though they worked hard in summer. Yet it is not a long vacation they get. I am sorry that I have not been there in winter to hear their yarns.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
