Chessington South Railway Station - History

History

The station was built in 1939 as a through station on the line being laid to Leatherhead. Construction of the line stopped, never to be resumed, on the outbreak of the Second World War and the up platform was never used for passenger trains. There was a goods yard beyond the passenger station. After the continuation to Leatherhead was abandoned, part was used from the mid 1960s to the end of the 1980s for a coal concentration depot. Today the line south of the station and the sidings to the coal depot are buried under trees.

The ticket office is at rail level. There is one Automated Ticket Machine at surface level, and a Permit to Travel machine adjacent to the ticket office. It is the station for visitors to Chessington World of Adventures.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

What has history to do with me? Mine is the first and only world! I want to report how I find the world. What others have told me about the world is a very small and incidental part of my experience. I have to judge the world, to measure things.
    Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951)

Free from public debt, at peace with all the world, and with no complicated interests to consult in our intercourse with foreign powers, the present may be hailed as the epoch in our history the most favorable for the settlement of those principles in our domestic policy which shall be best calculated to give stability to our Republic and secure the blessings of freedom to our citizens.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

Books of natural history aim commonly to be hasty schedules, or inventories of God’s property, by some clerk. They do not in the least teach the divine view of nature, but the popular view, or rather the popular method of studying nature, and make haste to conduct the persevering pupil only into that dilemma where the professors always dwell.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
