Cherryville High School - CHS Music Department

CHS Music Department

With the financial assistance of Mr. Ben Kendrick, of the Kendrick Brick and Tile Company of Cherryville, and Mr. C.A. Rudisill, founder of Carlton Yarn Mills also of Cherryville, the first marching/concert band for the school system was organized in 1913. The first bandleader was Russell Dellinger, who was followed by Sinclair Allen, Mr. Fox, Erskine W. Carson, Dale Grabill, Ravon Smith, Billy P. Sneed, and Michael Rogers .

During the early years of his tenure as band director, Mr. Dale Grabill composed both the Cherryville High School "Fight Song" and "Alma Mater", still "sung with vigor" at today's sporting and other high school events.

Famous quotes containing the words music and/or department:

    For do but note a wild and wanton herd
    Or race of youthful and unhandled colts
    Fetching mad bounds, bellowing and neighing loud,
    Which is the hot condition of their blood;
    If they but hear perchance a trumpet sound,
    Or any air of music touch their ears,
    You shall perceive them make a mutual stand,
    Their savage eyes turned to a modest gaze
    By the sweet power of music.
    William Shake{peare (1564–1616)

    “Which is more important to you, your field or your children?” the department head asked. She replied, “That’s like asking me if I could walk better if you amputated my right leg or my left leg.”
    —Anonymous Parent. As quoted in Women and the Work Family Dilemma, by Deborah J. Swiss and Judith P. Walker, ch. 2 (1993)
