Chemical Compound - Elementary Concepts

Elementary Concepts

Characteristic properties of compounds:

  • Elements in a compound are present in a definite proportion

Example- 2 atoms of hydrogen + 1 atom of oxygen becomes 1 molecule of compound-water.

  • Compounds have a definite set of properties

Elements that comprise a compound do not retain their original properties.
For example, hydrogen (combustible and non-supportive of combustion) + oxygen (non-combustible and supportive of combustion) becomes water (non-combustible and non-supportive of combustion)

Valency is the number of hydrogen atoms that can combine with one atom of the element to form a compound.

Famous quotes containing the words elementary and/or concepts:

Listen. We converse as we live—by repeating, by combining and recombining a few elements over and over again just as nature does when of elementary particles it builds a world.
    William Gass (b. 1924)

During our twenties...we act toward the new adulthood the way sociologists tell us new waves of immigrants acted on becoming Americans: we adopt the host culture’s values in an exaggerated and rigid fashion until we can rethink them and make them our own. Our idea of what adults are and what we’re supposed to be is composed of outdated childhood concepts brought forward.
    Roger Gould (20th century)
