Chatterjees are from the ancient Kashyap Gotra, which means all Chatterjees are descended from the ancient sage Kashyapa, son of Marichi as per the Puranas. Together with Mukherjees, Banerjees and Gangulys, Chatterjees form the highest tier of Bengali caste system.
