Charlotte 49ers Men's Basketball

The Charlotte 49ers men's basketball team represents UNC Charlotte in NCAA Division I basketball. The 49ers are currently members of the Atlantic 10 Conference after previously playing in the Sun Belt Conference, Metro Conference and Conference USA. Starting with the 2013-2014 season, Charlotte will return to Conference USA.

The basketball team has spent the better part of its short history in the shadow of the state's four Atlantic Coast Conference teams. However, the 49ers have carved out a niche of their own, making ten appearances in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. In their first appearance, in 1977, they advanced all the way to the Final Four. They have also earned regular and post-season championships in three different conferences.

The 49ers are currently coached by Alan Major and play their home games in Dale F. Halton Arena, an on-campus facility that seats 9,105.

Famous quotes containing the words men and/or basketball:

What terrible questions we are learning to ask! The former men believed in magic, by which temples, cities, and men were swallowed up, and all trace of them gone. We are coming on the secret of a magic which sweeps out of men’s minds all vestige of theism and beliefs which they and their fathers held and were framed upon.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.
    Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
