The rank of lieutenant, formerly used by the CMPD until the 1990s, was reintroduced in 2011 for response area commanders. Introduced in 2008, response area commanders oversee response areas within a district. Until 2011, they wore the insignia of a staff sergeant. All response area commands, formerly held by officers in the rank of sergeant, were regraded as lieutenants. 26 sergeants were promoted to lieutenant in January 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words rank and/or structure:
“I sometimes compare press officers to riflemen on the Sommemowing down wave upon wave of distortion, taking out rank upon rank of supposition, deduction and gossip.”
—Bernard Ingham (b. 1932)
“The question is still asked of women: How do you propose to answer the need for child care? That is an obvious attempt to structure conflict in the old terms. The questions are rather: If we as a human community want children, how does the total society propose to provide for them?”
