The rank of lieutenant, formerly used by the CMPD until the 1990s, was reintroduced in 2011 for response area commanders. Introduced in 2008, response area commanders oversee response areas within a district. Until 2011, they wore the insignia of a staff sergeant. All response area commands, formerly held by officers in the rank of sergeant, were regraded as lieutenants. 26 sergeants were promoted to lieutenant in January 2012.
