Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department - Organization

Organization

The CMPD is organized into the Office of the Chief of Police and five deputy chiefs. Each deputy chief leads a designated group:

  • Field Services-North
  • Field Services-South
  • Investigative Services
  • Support Services
  • Administrative Services.

The Field Services-North and Field Services-South Groups are divided into two areas, each led by a major. Each area is divided into three to four divisions, each led by a captain. Each Division is divided into three response areas; until mid-2011, each was commanded by a response area commander. Since then, each response area has been commanded by a lieutenant; currently, there are two sergeants to each response area, who are each unit commanders.

Some groups contain bureaus, headed by majors. Each bureau is also organized into divisions, commanded by captains, and units, commanded by sergeants.

As of May 2011, the department consisted of 1 chief of police, 4 deputy chiefs of police, 13 majors, 33 captains, 39 response area commanders (renamed lieutenants from July 2011), 127 sergeants and roughly 1464 officers.

Famous quotes containing the word organization:

The organization controlling the material equipment of our everyday life is such that what in itself would enable us to construct it richly plunges us instead into a poverty of abundance, making alienation all the more intolerable as each convenience promises liberation and turns out to be only one more burden. We are condemned to slavery to the means of liberation.
    Raoul Vaneigem (b. 1934)

When a man’s partner’s killed, he’s supposed to do something about it. It doesn’t make any difference what you thought of him, he was your partner and you’re supposed to do something about it. As it happens, we’re in the detective business; well, when one of your organization gets killed, it’s, it’s bad business to let the killer get away with it. Bad all around. Bad for every detective everywhere.
    John Huston (1906–1987)

Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed.
