National Team
Villanueva represented the United States basketball team at youth levels. In 2009, Villanueva wanted to switch sports nationality to the Dominican Republic. Under FIBA rules, he asked USA Basketball to release him in order to switch his sports nationality. He played for the Dominican Republic national basketball team in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship.
