Charles Wakefield, 1st Viscount Wakefield - Additional Notes

Additional Notes

It is often erroneously reported that Wakefield was commonly known by the nickname, or colloquial name, of "Cheers". Although he did prefer this name, it was in fact a given (baptismal) name, his middle name, having been the maiden name of his mother. As Wakefield and his wife, Francis were unable to have children, they took on the guardianship of a young girl Lillian Lye. Upon taking on the guardianship Wakefield changed her name to Freda Wakefield but never officially adopted her. Freda accompanied her guardians on many of their public engagements including Wakefield's business trip to America as part of the Sulgrave Institution. In turn Wakefield left Freda and her children a small living each for their future.
