Charles Stevens (pastor) - His Return To Salem Baptist Church

His Return To Salem Baptist Church

Upon his return, the people of Salem Baptist found a man that was more firmly grounded in God’s Word and a man more determined and quite capable of teaching and preaching biblical truth. In 1935, Charles Stevens had great success with a series of evening Bible classes. His classes continued and became very popular, attracting the layman and pastor alike from the spiritually barren Winston-Salem area. In the following years, around four hundred attended the classes. Charles Stevens saw that formal education, in many cases, was needed. From this Piedmont Bible Schools was founded. This later turned into Piedmont Bible College, and today is known as Piedmont Baptist College.

Famous quotes containing the words return, salem, baptist and/or church:

At twelve, the disintegration of afternoon
Began, the return to phantomerei, if not
To phantoms. Till then, it had been the other way:
One imagined the violet trees but the trees stood green,
At twelve, as green as ever they would be.
The sky was blue beyond the vaultiest phrase.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

I have always endeavored to acquire strict business habits; they are indispensable to every man. If your trade is with the Celestial Empire, then some small counting house on the coast, in some Salem harbor, will be fixture enough.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

You should approach Joyce’s Ulysses as the illiterate Baptist preacher approaches the Old Testament: with faith.
    William Faulkner (1897–1962)

Now folks, I hereby declare the first church of Tombstone, which ain’t got no name yet or no preacher either, officially dedicated. Now I don’t pretend to be no preacher, but I’ve read the Good Book from cover to cover and back again, and I nary found one word agin dancin’. So we’ll commence by havin’ a dad blasted good dance.
    Samuel G. Engel (1904–1984)
