Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science - Saturday Science Academy

Saturday Science Academy

The Drew Saturday Science Academy was created in 1990 to encourage students to excel at science and math. The program provides:

  1. A maximum of one teacher for every five students.
  2. Parents working in workshops and participating as volunteers.
  3. Physicians and medical students as mentors.
  4. Students a glimpse of what it's like to be a doctor.
  5. A nurturing environment which makes learning science, math and medicine interesting and fun for the children who enroll.

The program concludes with a white coat ceremony for the students. The Drew Saturday Science Academy Oath states "I, as a student of Charles Drew University ’s Saturday Science Academy II, promise by this oath that I shall treasure what I have learned in this program and continue my quest to higher education. Despite the obstacles that I may face in the future, I shall recognize that I have the power to overcome them and become a better person. And to show appreciation to those who have taught me, I shall accept the responsibility to teach others and to share my knowledge with everyone. I shall uphold these values to the best of my ability."

Famous quotes containing the words saturday, science and/or academy:

The return of the asymmetrical Saturday was one of those small events that were interior, local, almost civic and which, in tranquil lives and closed societies, create a sort of national bond and become the favorite theme of conversation, of jokes and of stories exaggerated with pleasure: it would have been a ready- made seed for a legendary cycle, had any of us leanings toward the epic.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)

Magic is akin to science in that it always has a definite aim intimately associated with human instincts, needs, and pursuits. The magic art is directed towards the attainment of practical aims. Like other arts and crafts, it is also governed by a theory, by a system of principles which dictate the manner in which the act has to be performed in order to be effective.
    Bronislaw Malinowski (1984–1942)

...I have come to make distinctions between what I call the academy and literature, the moral equivalents of church and God. The academy may lie, but literature tries to tell the truth.
    Dorothy Allison (b. 1949)
