Central Desert Shire - History

History

In October 2006 the Northern Territory Government announced the reform of local government areas. The intention of the reform was to improve and expand the delivery of services to towns and communities across the Northern Territory by establishing eleven new Shires. The Central Desert Shire was created on 1 July 2008.

Elections of Shire councillors were held on 25 October 2008. The current President (Mayor) of the Central Desert shire is Norbert Jampijinpa Patrick.

Much of the shire's area was previously unincorporated, but several Community Government Councils merged into the Central Desert Shire. These were:

  • Anmatjere CGC
  • Arltarlpilta CGC
  • Lajamanu CGC
  • Yuendumu CGC

Famous quotes containing the word history:

All history is a record of the power of minorities, and of minorities of one.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Every member of the family of the future will be a producer of some kind and in some degree. The only one who will have the right of exemption will be the mother ...
Ruth C. D. Havens, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 13, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

What is most interesting and valuable in it, however, is not the materials for the history of Pontiac, or Braddock, or the Northwest, which it furnishes; not the annals of the country, but the natural facts, or perennials, which are ever without date. When out of history the truth shall be extracted, it will have shed its dates like withered leaves.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
