Central Bank of Syria

The Central Bank of Syria (Arabic: مصرف سورية المركزي‎) is the central bank of Syria. The bank is located in Damascus with branches in major cities. The US, Canada, EU, Arab League and Turkey all imposed Sanctions on the central bank because of Syrian civil war. In the case of the US sanctions had already been in place against the Central Bank of Syria as a result of Section 311 of the Patriot Act, which accused the Bank of money laundering.

The Central Bank of Syria has actively been trying to undermine these various sanctions, with Bank officials meeting with friendly institutions such as Gazprombank executives in Moscow in March of 2012. The Central Bank of Syria has taken an increasingly clandestine role in the domestic private sector as the country's status as a pariah state and its failing economy have deterred foreign investment.

Famous quotes containing the words central, bank and/or syria:

    In a large university, there are as many deans and executive heads as there are schools and departments. Their relations to one another are intricate and periodic; in fact, “galaxy” is too loose a term: it is a planetarium of deans with the President of the University as a central sun. One can see eclipses, inner systems, and oppositions.
    Jacques Barzun (b. 1907)

    That strain again, it had a dying fall;
    O, it came o’er my ear like the sweet sound
    That breathes upon a bank of violets,
    Stealing and giving odor. Enough, no more,
    ‘Tis not so sweet now as it was before.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    ...that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel.
    Bible: Hebrew, 2 Kings 5:8.

    Elijah to the king of Israel who has received a letter from the king of Syria looking for someone to cure his commander of leprosy.
