Center For Railway Information Systems - History of CRIS

History of CRIS

In 1982, the Indian Railways set up a Central Organization (COFOIS) for computerization of the freight operations of Indian Railways. By 1986, the need for a dedicated, autonomous organization had become apparent. The Ministry of Railways established the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), an umbrella organization for all information technology related activities on Indian Railways (IR). It was entrusted with the task of designing, developing and implementing the FOIS and its associated communications infrastructure. The Centre started functioning in July 1987 as an autonomous organization headed by its Managing Director.

A unique feature of CRIS is the presence of IT specialists as well as railway domain experts on deputation from the Indian Railways.

Some of the systems managed by CRIS have received international recognition, such as Computerworld Honors.

Famous quotes containing the words history of, history and/or cris:

Certainly there is not the fight recorded in Concord history, at least, if in the history of America, that will bear a moment’s comparison with this, whether for the numbers engaged in it, or for the patriotism and heroism displayed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

... that there is no other way,
That the history of creation proceeds according to
    Stringent laws, and that things
Do get done in this way, but never the things
We set out to accomplish and wanted so desperately
    To see come into being.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

Phlébas, le Phénicien, pendant quinze jours noyé,
Oubliait les cris des mouettes et la houle de Cornouaille.
