Famous quotes containing the words center, democracy, human and/or rights:

I don’t think America’s the center of the world anymore. I think African women will lead the way [in] ... women’s liberation ... The African woman, she’s got a country, she’s got the flag, she’s got her own army, got the navy. She doesn’t have a racism problem. She’s not afraid that if she speaks up, her man will say goodbye to her.
    Faith Ringgold (b. 1934)

Unless democracy is to commit suicide by consenting to its own destruction, it will have to find some formidable answer to those who come to it saying: “I demand from you in the name of your principles the rights which I shall deny to you later in the name of my principles.”
    Walter Lippmann (1889–1974)

All human life is here, but the Holy Ghost seems to be somewhere else.
    Anthony Burgess (b. 1917)

All the rights secured to the citizens under the Constitution are worth nothing, and a mere bubble, except guaranteed to them by an independent and virtuous Judiciary.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)
