CDU/CSU - Political Stance

Political Stance

On the political stance, CDU and CSU usually only differ slightly. The CSU is usually considered a bit more socially conservative (esp. on family issues; e.g. the CSU favors to pay infants' parents for not going to work while the CDU favors public funding of day-nurseries), eurosceptical (in 1998, then-chancellor Helmut Kohl of the CDU had to pressure the CSU intensely to not veto the introduction of the Euro currency in Germany) and regionalist (CSU politicians often make their mark as self-declared defenders of Bavaria's state rights and cultural independence from federal bureaucrats, even in times of conservative federal governments). While both party officially identify themselves as non-denominational Christian, the catholic influence on the CSU is far stronger than on the CDU, since Bavaria is predominantly catholic, while Christians in Germany as a whole are approximately equally balanced between Catholics and Protestants.

Famous quotes containing the words political and/or stance:

I have never known a novel that was good enough to be good in spite of its being adapted to the author’s political views.
    Edith Wharton (1862–1937)

For good teaching rests neither in accumulating a shelfful of knowledge nor in developing a repertoire of skills. In the end, good teaching lies in a willingness to attend and care for what happens in our students, ourselves, and the space between us. Good teaching is a certain kind of stance, I think. It is a stance of receptivity, of attunement, of listening.
    Laurent A. Daloz (20th century)
