Carlos Lopes - Popular Culture

Popular Culture

  • Carlos Lopes appears in the 14th episode of the season 12 of The Simpsons, as Homer is watching great moments of the Olympic history. He is credited with being the oldest ever winner of the Marathon, at 38, and inspires Homer, who claims to be almost his age, to enter Springfield Marathon. The age presented is inaccurate because Lopes was 37 when he won the marathon. His name however is correctly pronounced in Portuguese (Lopes).

Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:

I am glad of this war. It kicks the pasteboard bottom in of the usual “good” popular novel. People have felt much more deeply and strongly these last few months.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

Why is it so difficult to see the lesbian—even when she is there, quite plainly, in front of us? In part because she has been “ghosted”Mor made to seem invisible—by culture itself.... Once the lesbian has been defined as ghostly—the better to drain her of any sensual or moral authority—she can then be exorcised.
Terry Castle, U.S. lesbian author. The Apparitional Lesbian, ch. 1 (1993)
