Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site - The Site Today

The Site Today

Today the Carl Sandburg National Historic site attracts more than 26,000 visitors a year, most of whom come during the leaf season. The U.S. government has designated the goats an historic herd. About fifteen goats are kept on the farm at any given time. The interior of the home is arranged in a manner similar to how Sandburgs maintained it during the 1950s.

Under the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008, supported by North Carolina's congressional delegation, authorizes the expansion of the site by 115 acres (0.47 km2) to protect the scenic view, create additional parking, and to establish a visitor's center.

Famous quotes containing the words site and/or today:

It is not menstrual blood per se which disturbs the imagination—unstanchable as that red flood may be—but rather the albumen in the blood, the uterine shreds, placental jellyfish of the female sea. This is the chthonian matrix from which we rose. We have an evolutionary revulsion from slime, our site of biologic origins. Every month, it is woman’s fate to face the abyss of time and being, the abyss which is herself.
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)

All great art, and today all great artlessness, must appear extreme to the mass of men, as we know them today. It springs from the anguish of great souls. From the souls of men not formed, but deformed in factories whose inspiration is pelf.
    Alexander Trocchi (1925–1983)
